Dauji Mandir

About 18 kilometres from Mathura is one of the most revered temples of the country, the Dauji Mandir. The temple has stood for over 5000 years since 1535 AD and is one of the oldest temples in the city. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Balarama, who was the elder sibling of Lord Krishna.

Devotees and pilgrims from all over the country gather at the temple to offer prayers in the holy abode of Baladev manifestation of the Lord Vishnu. The idol of Lord Baladev is considered as the hugest of Braja Mandal, black in colour and having two hands. The deity is about 7 feet tall. While the left-hand holds a royal cup with Varuni (the holy drink) in it, the right hand is elevated and can be discovered by the devotees when they offer prayers. Equipped with exquisite dress and embellishments, the idol radiates magnificence.

Apart from the chief deity that is Lord Balaram, there is also a statue of his wife, Revati, dressed exquisitely. One of the significant factors about this temple is the presence of Kshir Sagar, which has added a lot in making Dauji Mandir one of the most intriguing pilgrimage destinations in the country. The temple is a must-visit for all those who are fascinated by mythology, culture, history and spirituality.

Architecture of Dauji Mandir
The temple, which is rooted in Hindu mythology and stores high cultural significance is built in typical Indian architectural style. It has three doors on three sides each of which gives access to the calla, one of which is surmounted by a squat pyramidal tower. Inside the main sanctum, the walls display beautiful artworks as well as decorated idols of Lord Balarama and his wife, Revati. Baladeva serves as the chief deity while there is a life-sized statue of Revati as well.

Dauji Mandir complex has an adjoining court, where there is a small vaulted chamber believed to be the residence to the God post his epiphany. Each court or Kunj bears the name of its founder. The Kshir Sagar or Sea of Milk is a tank built of bricks, spread over 80 years square. The sea is not in good condition and its surface is covered with thick green scum. Nevertheless, the pilgrims still bathe in it.

How To Reach Dauji Mandir
The temple is located about 25 kilometres southeast of Mathura, on the other side of the river. One can visit it while travelling to Gokula or Raval. Dauji Mandir can be reached using local transport like buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis. The city has its own railway station and the Agra Kheria Airport is located 60 kilometres from here.
